At YMCA Chiltern Group, we’re looking for a fabulous and talented Bids & Commercial Development Lead to strengthen the quality and competitiveness of our funding, tender and commercial submissions. If you are a persuasive writer and commercially aware leader who can bring creativity, people, evidence, pricing and ideas together to write winning propositions, then we’d love to hear from you

 About the opportunity

This is a pivotal role within our Strategic Income & Growth team. You’ll act as our centre of excellence for bid development, commercial proposition design and tender governance, helping us pursue the right opportunities with confidence and discipline. Working closely with operational leaders, Finance and the Head of Strategic Income & Growth, you’ll ensure opportunities are assessed, prioritised and progressed through robust processes that maximise income, impact and long-term sustainability. This is an opportunity to strengthen our organisational readiness, shape fundable service models and turn our expertise and evidence into compelling submissions that create lasting value. What you’ll be doing You will lead the coordination, development and submission of tenders, contracts, grant applications and commercial proposals aligned with our organisational priorities. You’ll identify and assess commercial and funding opportunities, coordinate clear go/no-go decisions and focus resources on activity with the strongest strategic, financial and social return. You’ll own bid governance, approvals, resource planning and quality assurance, maintaining effective templates, evidence libraries and submission tools while embedding learning from every outcome. Working with operational colleagues, you’ll shape service models, outcomes frameworks, delivery approaches, pricing and mobilisation plans, translating complex evidence and insight into persuasive cases for support. You’ll also oversee the funding and tender pipeline, provide accurate forecasts and performance reporting, line manage the Trusts and Foundations Officer and build productive relationships with commissioners, funders, partners and colleagues.

What we are looking for

Significant experience of leading successful tenders, grants or commercial submissions, ideally within charity, public, health, housing or community services. A track record of managing complex projects, coordinating multiple stakeholders and delivering high-quality submissions to tight deadlines. Exceptional proposal-writing skills, strong commercial awareness, analytical ability and financial understanding, with the ability to demonstrate quality, value for money and social impact. Genuine creativity to make our proposals stand out and write in a way that truly reflects our values, purpose and voice. Excellent planning, project-management and influencing skills, with the confidence to engage senior stakeholders, commissioners, funders and partners while managing competing priorities. A highly organised, proactive and collaborative approach, with close attention to detail and a commitment to quality, innovation, continuous improvement and YMCA Chiltern Group’s mission.

 Why this role?

This is a rare opportunity to shape how one of Europe’s largest YMCA organisations develops winning propositions and secures sustainable income for future growth. You’ll work across the organisation, influence important investment decisions and build the systems, evidence and capability that make our submissions stronger and more competitive. Most importantly, you’ll help turn opportunity into sustainable services and impact, enabling YMCA Chiltern Group to continue helping people belong, contribute and thrive in body, mind and spirit.

One YMCA and its subsidiaries, the Early Childhood Partnership (ECP) and Signpost are on an exciting journey to double our impact by 2025. We are over half way through an exciting new strategy launched in the first hour of the new decade, via email where all staff and volunteers were invited to put themselves forward to apply and attend an intensive, three-day Kickstarter Event.

By the end of these three days, there was a brilliantly multi-faceted set of themes and ideas, which formed the starting point for the rest of the Mission 25 process to build on. The aim of Mission 25 is to give every staff member and volunteer the opportunity to play their part in shaping the strategy to do “more and better, together” so that we double our impact by 2025. We deliver a vast array of services across Herts, Beds and Bucks that reach over 135,000 individuals annually.

These include:

  • Provision of over 700 units of accommodation for homeless people
  • Move on accommodation for individuals moving onto independent living
  • Housing and practical/emotional support for young asylum seekers
  • Community HUBs hosting a range of activities and meeting space hire
  • Childcare provision in Hertfordshire
  • Family support through a network of children’s and family centres covering Hertfordshire and Bedford
  • Therapeutic and non-therapeutic support for male and female victims of domestic abuse and their children
  • Independent sexual violence services across Bedfordshire, Luton and Hertfordshire
  • Domestic abuse perpetrator reform programmes across Bedfordshire
  • Youth services offering emotional wellbeing support and youth club opportunities for 11-19 year olds alongside our National Airplay programme funded by the RAF Benevolent Fund
  • A community gym where everyone can enjoy the benefits of physical exercise Our values remain at the forefront of how we operate as a charity, and it is important to us that all staff and volunteers can fully buy in to our ethos.

YMCA is a global movement that empowers communities and young people to build a just, sustainable, equitable and inclusive world. Founded over 160 years ago, the movement gave birth to basketball, volleyball, Father’s Day, and inner city hostels, and has grown to be the world’s largest youth organisation with over 50 million members in 121 countries.

"One YMCA" represents the movement in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, and is now one of the largest YMCA’s in Europe. Our focus is supporting vulnerable individuals and families to develop the skills and confidence they need to progress towards independence, so they are able to live their life to the full. Our approach is holistic and so we offer a wide range of services that include Housing, Community, Family Support, Youth and Children’s Activity Programmes, Early Years Education, and Specialist Therapeutic Support.

In the last five years, we have trebled our income to £40m, and more than doubled our colleague numbers to over 750. We are ambitious to continue to serve even more people and plan to grow our impact across our four counties, whilst also playing a growing role globally in what 14,000 other YMCAs are seeking to achieve globally through our shared 2030 Vision.
