  • Start date: As soon as possible

We are seeking an inspiring and well-qualified Teacher of English to join our successful and supportive English department as soon as possible on a temporary basis. This appointment will provide cover during a period of staff absence, with the duration of the appointment currently uncertain.

This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and committed teacher to work with motivated pupils in a high-performing department, providing continuity of learning and maintaining the high standards of teaching for which the school is known.

The role

The successful candidate will teach English across Key Stages 3 and 4, delivering engaging, academically rigorous lessons that develop pupils' confidence, curiosity and appreciation of language and literature. You will have strong subject knowledge, high expectations and the ability to inspire pupils of differing abilities, supporting them to make excellent progress.

You will work closely with departmental colleagues to ensure continuity of learning, contribute to effective assessment and feedback, and support pupils in developing the knowledge and skills required for success at IGCSE and beyond.

We are looking for an excellent classroom practitioner who is organised, adaptable and collaborative, with the confidence to establish positive relationships and purposeful learning environments from the outset.

The department

English is a thriving and academically ambitious subject at The Grammar School at Leeds, with a strong record of excellent teaching and consistently impressive examination results at both GCSE and A level.

All pupils study English Language and English Literature throughout Key Stages 3 and 4, following Pearson IGCSE specifications at Key Stage 4. Our carefully structured Key Stage 3 curriculum develops the knowledge and skills required for future success while allowing teachers the flexibility to explore a rich and varied range of literary texts.

The department is committed to ensuring that all pupils are appropriately challenged and supported. Alongside high-quality classroom teaching, pupils benefit from targeted intervention, subject clinics and a range of enrichment opportunities. At A level, pupils can access extension classes and additional opportunities designed to support those considering further study of English at university.

You will join a collaborative and reflective team that values academic rigour, intellectual curiosity and a shared commitment to excellent pupil outcomes.

The successful candidate

You will have a good degree in English or a closely related subject, a recognised teaching qualification and the subject knowledge and classroom expertise to deliver high-quality teaching across Key Stages 3 and 4.

We welcome applications from experienced teachers and early career teachers who can demonstrate the confidence, enthusiasm and adaptability required to provide effective teaching during this period of temporary cover.

Above all, we are seeking someone who can join us promptly, establish strong relationships with pupils and colleagues, and make an immediate and positive contribution to pupils' learning.
