If you are driven by the empowerment, support and care of children who have faced significant trauma - and are committed shaping an environment for their development and wellbeing - this is where your work can make life-changing impact.

About the role

Whilst part of a rapidly expanding staff team, currently with over 20 employees, this role will work closely in support of the Supported Housing Deputy Manager at one of our accommodation projects in the Watford area, working to deliver the organisation’s overarching mission of ending homelessness and rough sleeping. Our team work relentlessly to provide children looked after the therapeutic care they need to recover, grow and thrive. We work with compassion and diligence to create and deliver nurturing care, with homes, environments and support that enable children to belong, contribute and thrive as they build connections, discover their strengths and shape their own futures.

Our dedicated team is passionate about the wellbeing of our children and the excellence of our support. We recognise each child as an individual, with their own interests, challenges and ways of understanding the world. Our team meets children where they are and provides the psychologically informed care that they need to grow their capabilities and to engage and contribute to the world around them.

What you’ll be responsible for

You will lead the site at weekends providing guidance to the team to ensure they are equipped to support beneficiaries to progress towards independence and independent living.

You will support the Deputy Manager to deliver a safe, effective and high-quality service for beneficiaries and develop a positive value-based culture within the service.

You will take a hands-on approach in day to day case management and offer practical support to colleagues as needed, whilst showing effective leadership.

This role will work on a fixed 40-hour rota working 4 x 10.5 hour days Friday Saturday Sunday and Monday 0930 – 2000 with an unpaid 30-minute break.

One YMCA and its subsidiaries, the Early Childhood Partnership (ECP) and Signpost are on an exciting journey to double our impact by 2025. We are over half way through an exciting new strategy launched in the first hour of the new decade, via email where all staff and volunteers were invited to put themselves forward to apply and attend an intensive, three-day Kickstarter Event.

By the end of these three days, there was a brilliantly multi-faceted set of themes and ideas, which formed the starting point for the rest of the Mission 25 process to build on. The aim of Mission 25 is to give every staff member and volunteer the opportunity to play their part in shaping the strategy to do “more and better, together” so that we double our impact by 2025. We deliver a vast array of services across Herts, Beds and Bucks that reach over 135,000 individuals annually.

These include:

  • Provision of over 700 units of accommodation for homeless people
  • Move on accommodation for individuals moving onto independent living
  • Housing and practical/emotional support for young asylum seekers
  • Community HUBs hosting a range of activities and meeting space hire
  • Childcare provision in Hertfordshire
  • Family support through a network of children’s and family centres covering Hertfordshire and Bedford
  • Therapeutic and non-therapeutic support for male and female victims of domestic abuse and their children
  • Independent sexual violence services across Bedfordshire, Luton and Hertfordshire
  • Domestic abuse perpetrator reform programmes across Bedfordshire
  • Youth services offering emotional wellbeing support and youth club opportunities for 11-19 year olds alongside our National Airplay programme funded by the RAF Benevolent Fund
  • A community gym where everyone can enjoy the benefits of physical exercise Our values remain at the forefront of how we operate as a charity, and it is important to us that all staff and volunteers can fully buy in to our ethos.

YMCA is a global movement that empowers communities and young people to build a just, sustainable, equitable and inclusive world. Founded over 160 years ago, the movement gave birth to basketball, volleyball, Father’s Day, and inner city hostels, and has grown to be the world’s largest youth organisation with over 50 million members in 121 countries.

"One YMCA" represents the movement in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, and is now one of the largest YMCA’s in Europe. Our focus is supporting vulnerable individuals and families to develop the skills and confidence they need to progress towards independence, so they are able to live their life to the full. Our approach is holistic and so we offer a wide range of services that include Housing, Community, Family Support, Youth and Children’s Activity Programmes, Early Years Education, and Specialist Therapeutic Support.

In the last five years, we have trebled our income to £40m, and more than doubled our colleague numbers to over 750. We are ambitious to continue to serve even more people and plan to grow our impact across our four counties, whilst also playing a growing role globally in what 14,000 other YMCAs are seeking to achieve globally through our shared 2030 Vision.
