About Us

At James Brown Funeral Directors, we are proud to have been serving our local communities with care, compassion, and professionalism since 1904. As part of Funeral Partners, we are committed to setting the highest standards within the profession and supporting families at the most difficult times in their lives.

Our people are at the heart of everything we do. We work as a team, supporting one another to deliver a respectful and dignified service to every family in our care.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a compassionate and reliable individual to join us as an Out of Hours Funeral Service Operative, supporting our on-call rota.

This is a unique and flexible role focused solely on bringing loved ones into our care when a death occurs out of hours. You will often be the first point of contact for families during difficult times, so professionalism, empathy, and discretion are essential.

Unlike a full-time Funeral Service Operative role, this position is dedicated exclusively to overnight, on-call work, with no daytime or weekend commitments required.

Working Pattern

  • On-call between 8:00pm and 8:00am, Saturday to Sunday only
  • Minimum commitment of one Saturday & Sunday in every 4 week period
  • Shifts can be worked one weekend consecutively or across different weekends
  • You are not required to remain on site – simply be available to attend when needed

This flexibility makes the role particularly suitable for students or individuals with other work or daytime commitments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responding to out-of-hours calls when required
  • Bringing the deceased into our care with dignity and respect
  • Supporting families in a calm, compassionate, and professional manner
  • Driving company vehicles (full UK licence required)
  • Ensuring all procedures are carried out sensitively and in line with company standards

What We Offer

  • Standby payment: £35.39 per night (paid whether called out or not)
    • Plus a Removal fee: £38.00 per call-out attended

You’ll enjoy the satisfaction of working within a small local team alongside the all the benefits of a much larger national company. We have family friendly policies and can offer flexible working as well as:

  • Comprehensive training for all our roles and opportunities to achieve industry recognised qualifications.
  • Full uniform
  • Opportunities to work within the local community
  • Reward and recognition scheme
  • Regular feedback surveys and opportunities to join project group
  • Employee assistance service

In addition to your salary, you will also receive:

  • Holiday pay
  • Life Assurance
  • Pension
  • Family and friends discounts
  • Christmas vouchers
  • Cycle to Work Scheme
  • Eye care
  • Refer a friend scheme

About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is calm, dependable, and able to respond promptly when on call
  • Has a caring and respectful approach to sensitive situations
  • Can work independently during overnight hours
  • Holds a full UK manual driving licence
  • Has good communication and customer service skills
