What can you expect?

This role will work with the Head of Commercial Pricing to set up and drive forward a European Commercial Pricing team. You will play a key role in devising a pricing strategy that aligns with the overall firm strategy, setting up the foundations of the pricing function, promoting effective and consistent pricing practices and addressing a wide range of pricing enquiries in a way that enhances our client service, increases revenue and improves profitability. Our approach to pricing goes well beyond the numbers and so whilst your mathematical skills and commercial acumen will come into play, you can expect the role to also call upon your ability to write compelling pricing proposals and lead commercial conversations both internally and with clients.

This is a permanent position, based in London. You will be reporting into the Head of Commercial Pricing with line manager responsibility for the Pricing Manager. You will also work closely with the firm's legal teams, partners, business development specialists and central management.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the development of the pricing strategy and leading on strategically important pricing projects.
  • Driving consistent implementation of the strategy across the firm.
  • Managing and mentoring pricing team members, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.
  • Undertaking rate reviews for key clients, including coaching Partners through (or leading on) rate negotiations with the client.
  • Providing insightful and actionable guidance to Partners on their pricing strategy at a client, matter and pitch level.
  • Advising on hourly rates combining client, relationship and market knowledge with profitability checks to ensure the rates are consistent across similar clients, market appropriate and profitable.
  • Working with client and matter teams to generate fee estimates and pricing arrangements that are tailored to meet our clients’ fee objectives and helping them to articulate our pricing in a client friendly way.
  • Working with client teams to respond to questions relating to our approach to pricing and use of alternative fee arrangements in response to RFPs and ad-hoc client and matter requests.
  • Advising on strategy for e-auctions.
  • Preparing for and engaging in effective pricing conversations with the client (directly or through partner coaching).
  • Assisting with the creation of, and ongoing improvement, of the firm's pricing processes, including supporting the design, development and implementation of self-service pricing tools to improve consistency, accuracy and profitability.
  • Directing the analysis of client and matter profitability, tracking pricing decisions, drawing on learnings and identifying trends and opportunities to improve accuracy, consistency, increased revenue and sustained profitability.
  • Providing internal training and guidance on the firm's approach to talking about pricing with our clients, the use of alternative fee arrangements and how to have effective client conversations.
  • Providing external training to clients on our approach to pricing and the use of alternative fee arrangements.

Experience and Knowledge

  • A strong background in the pricing of commercial legal services.
  • Broad experience of devising and managing alternative fee arrangements to the hourly rate.
  • An excellent track record of working with and influencing senior management, ideally within a partnership environment.
  • Experience in leading pricing discussions and negotiations directly with clients.
  • Gravitas and credibility.
  • Collaborative team player with a client centric mindset.
  • Strong commercial awareness with the ability to influence strategic thinking and direction
  • Excellent relationship building, stakeholder management and influencing skills.
  • Excellent project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills with the ability to interface at all levels, building and developing strong client relationships. European language capability would be an advantage.
  • Ability to balance and deliver on both the operational and strategic sides of the role and show flexibility.
  • Ability to deal sensitively with difficult issues and challenging stakeholders.

In addition to UK, China and Silicon Valley we have offices in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain.

With 1,800 people across 25 offices in 13 countries you might expect an impersonal office culture, but you will find a homely, family feel even in the largest offices.

Quality on both sides
Across all our offices and jurisdictions are market-leading practices in corporate/M&A, finance, real estate, energy and natural resources, technology and life sciences.

We count as clients large corporations including major technology firms, pharmaceutical and life sciences companies, energy suppliers, infrastructure companies, global banks and financial institutions.

We aim to ensure equality of opportunity and are actively working towards improving the diversity of our staff. Applications will be considered on merit and the applicant's suitability to meet the requirements of the role.

"It is great being in a firm which "gets" cross-office working – to feel properly part of a national team and to work with colleagues in other specialisms who are unconstrained by geography."

"I consider Fieldfisher to be a progressive firm with an understanding of social values. I'm pleased that staff is able to have input in the firm's direction and purpose as well as help to shape wider society. I'm encouraged to perform by being able to develop in a natural way, whilst being supported at every step.

Fieldfisher has managed to nurture a really positive and friendly culture. If they have drive and ambition, I would encourage anybody looking for a role here to grab the opportunity."

"Since joining Fieldfisher in 2016, I have progressed from an entry-level secretarial role to an experienced executive assistant. This was made possible by a supportive and inclusive working environment that allows staff to progress at a pace that is best suited to them which in turn makes for well-rounded, home-grown talent.

The firm strikes a great balance between providing the foundations for success and autonomy of your own growth and development. An insight I would give to potential applicants is that Fieldfisher offers the opportunity for a career and a sense of belonging to a community and not just a job."
